Academic Service: My Faculty Committee Assignments for 2026-27

Every year, tenure-track and tenured professors at my institution serve on a variety of faculty committees, which are an essential component of faculty governance for a law school. The committees have meetings (either in person or by Zoom), and the number of meetings depends on the workload of the committee, which varies considerably. At these meetings, academic policies are discussed, debated, and adopted by vote, after which they are committed to writing as formal policy proposals, which then go to the full faculty for a vote. Some committees, like those making tenure decisions, admissions, or financial aid, must vote on individual cases or candidates. My committee assignments for the coming year are administrative (general policies). 2. Part-Time and Online Education Committee

  • Type: Standing Faculty Committee
  • Role: Committee Member
  • Composition: 7 faculty members, 5 ex-officio administrators/associate deans
  • Governance Framework: Works in coordination with the Curriculum Committee, Associate Dean for Part-Time and Online Education, Associate Dean for Curriculum and Academics, Associate Dean for Experiential Education, and Associate Dean for Faculty.
  • Mission & Scope: Oversees part-time and online curricular/co-curricular delivery models to ensure parity with or superiority to residential programs. Evaluates pedagogical and assessment strategies for distance learning, conducts faculty development workshops, and analyzes empirical efficacy data for course delivery methods. Reports to the Dean and faculty.

 

3. Exam Policy Committee

  • Type: Ad Hoc Committee
  • Term: Fall Semester
  • Role: Committee Member (Fall)
  • Composition: 7 faculty members, 3 ex-officio administrators/associate deans
  • Mission & Scope: Formulates structural revisions to institutional examination policies to balance scheduling flexibility with academic integrity. Scope of review includes exam rescheduling procedures, parameters for take-home vs. online vs. in-person testing formats, exam duration metrics, accommodation impacts under disability standards, and risk mitigation against academic dishonesty facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies.

 

4. Facilities Committee

  • Type: Ad Hoc Committee
  • Role: Committee Member
  • Composition: Chaired by the Dean, 6 faculty members, 4 ex-officio administrators/associate deans, and 1 Board Member ex-officio
  • Mission & Scope: Advises the Dean and the Board of Directors on faculty needs regarding institutional real estate, physical plant operations, design priorities, campus maintenance, and facility renovation strategies.

Gun Shop & Gun Maker Agree to $2.5million Settlement over Snipers

I posted a lengthy response to a comment I received on this, and decided to republish the post... YES! News reports say that Bull's Eye Shooter Supply of Tacoma agreed to pay $2 million to survivors and families of victims of the notorious Washington, DC snipers (John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo). Gun maker Bushmaster Firearms Inc. of Windham, Maine, will pay $500,000. It apparently marks the first time a gun maker has agreed to pay such a settlement. This is real progress in the march toward having gun prices reflect their true "cost" more accurately. Up to now the social cost of murder victims was externalized onto nonusers. If the idea catches on, gun makers and shops will start insuring against the liability, and pass the cost of the premiums through to buyers; buyers will then be paying a more realistic price for the product instead of getting a susbidy from innocent bystanders.
